Why Become a Member?
To Support our Values and Our Project
We aim to build a membership of like-minded people who support our ideal to cherish and nourish publications and discussion that celebrate the local, the particular, and progressive human values. We see this as radically different from the preoccupations of contemporary commercial publishing. We aim to build a warm fraternity around these values. As a non profit community enterprise, we will keep membership fees to a minimum and use any monies for the common good. As an incorporated organisation we will also seek to leverage membership income with grants and donations to continue the good work of Shiel Street Press, including supporting emerging authors and new voices generally.
Governance
All members are invited to participate in key governance processes, especially the AGM, that support and develop the work of the Press. Through this Members will support the work of our not for profit incorporated organisation.
Events
We plan to host a series of regular events that will be intellectually and socially stimulating for Members, including book launches, writing seminars and other discussions. We encourage Members to help us design and run these events. We hope to provide Member discounts for any fee paying events and will look to co-investment from social partners (e.g. City of Melbourne) to reduce entry costs.
Fraternal and Co-Memberships
We aim to establish fraternal links with kindred social groups, such as the Hotham History Society, and to explore the benefits of collaboration and co-membership.
Community Business Engagement
We hope to engage and support community businesses and social organisations in mutually supporting ways. As part of this we will explore benefits for members such as discounts and offerings from our friendly and partner organisations. It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Become a Member
Shiel Street Press welcomes new members who share our values and who wish to be part of our publishing journey. As an incorporated non profit organisation we invite anyone wishing to become a member to contact the Secretary, Brendan Gleeson, so that sign up can be arranged.
Hope to hear from you soon!
